les audiences concernant l’extradition de Julian Assange vers les Etats-Unis reprendront

.Julian Assange est toujours détenu à Belmarsh en Grande-Bretagne dans l’attente d’un possible transfert aux Etats-Unis qui l’exposerait à des risques de torture et mauvais traitements ainsi qu’à un procès inéquitable. Les autorités britanniques se doivent d’ailleurs de respecter le droit international qui empêche l’extradition d’une personne vers un pays où elle risque une violation de ses droits humains.

Les charges d’espionnage qui pèsent contre Julian Assange

font suite à son travail avec Wikileaks et la publication de documents, notamment de preuves de possibles crimes de guerre commis par l’armée américaine. Julian Assange n’a commis pas moins qu’un travail de journaliste et sa poursuite pénale représente une menace directe pour la liberté d’expression et pour le travail journalistique à travers le monde.

The European Parliament voted in favor of protecting Snowden from prosecution in 2015. Now 26 Members of the European Parliament have sent a letter to President Trump, asking him to pardon Snowden.

The Members of the European Parliament note that Snowden exposed a “potential threat to civil rights of Americans and people overseas,” and that the case underscores “

the vital role whistleblowers play in safeguarding fundamental rights

.”

The letter continues:

Our common goal of building an accountable and transparent society is violated every time we persecute those who put public interest far above their personal well-being and security.

The United States and many nations are engaged in a struggle between the growing surveillance state and precious civil liberties. Edward Snowden boldly stepped forward as a whistleblower to expose the National Security Agency’s vast spying on phone records and online communications.

Explaining his actions, the computer expert, now effectively exiled to Russia and threatened with extradition and prosecution, said: “I can’t in good conscience allow the U.S. government to destroy privacy, internet freedom, and basic liberties for people around the world with this massive surveillance machine they’re secretly building.”
